In a class of its own…..
Yorston Lodge is a co-educational independent school for children from 3 to 11-years and has been described by Ofsted as “an outstandingly effective school which meets its aims”.
The inspectors added…
“Pupils’ progress, concentration, behaviour and personal development are excellent and academic standards are very high.”
With its warm and cheerful atmosphere and the staff’s ability to build the self-esteem, confidence and learning of pupils, the Ofsted inspectors failed to find fault with what Headmistress, Mrs Janet Dallimore, describes as one of the happiest schools in the county.
Every aspect of the school’s work with children won glowing praise in the inspector’s report.
“The curriculum is outstanding. It goes well beyond the National Curriculum to cover performing arts, reasoning and languages. It is broad and balanced, giving pupils an excellent foundation for secondary education.”
Over the last 100 years, Yorston Lodge has gained a reputation for producing high academic standards from very small classes within a caring family atmosphere. Above all else, we are a happy school where pupils work hard, play hard, and so enjoy their life.
The classes have a maximum of eighteen but with our support teachers, the ratio in many lessons is 1: 9. We believe that children flourish at this age with boys and girls working together in harmony.
Many generations of the same family have passed through the school and regardless of age, everyone knows everyone else. Yorston is just like a large family and new children settle in very quickly. The older children take great pride in helping their younger counterparts.
In the recent entrance examinations at 11-plus, all our pupils passed for at least one school of their choice, which gives an indication of the high academic standards. We use traditional teaching methods. The learning of spelling, grammar, punctuation, tables and exercises in handwriting are considered vital building blocks.
In addition to the usual subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography, Games, P.E, Art and Craft, Music and Drama, the Junior school curriculum also includes lessons in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, French, Information Technology, Design Technology and Latin.
The Kindergarten School, for rising 3’s, provides early academic learning and promotes good social skills through the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
An optional extended school day from 8.00 until 6.00 provides extra-curricular activities for the pupils. The school runs a holiday club which ensures care for 50 weeks of the year.
The school has an active PTA with each form having a representative who ensures that parents are quickly welcomed into the Yorston family. A weekly bulletin keeps all parents informed of the school’s many events.
It is only by visiting us that you will be able to appreciate the high academic standards and see happy children at work.
Please telephone the Headmistress to make an appointment to view the school where you will see the high standards of discipline which are created within a happy classroom with small numbers of pupils and fully qualified, dedicated and caring teachers.
